Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning get mixed up quite often. Although they share some similarities and target some of the same skin concerns, they also have their own lanes. When it comes to addressing your concerns and deciding between the two treatments, alot of us feel perplexed about not knowing which facial we should be booking and when. So, let’s dive in and take a look and gain more clarity on why these are or aren’t the ideal treatments for you.

Both Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning are forms of exfoliation which removes the outer layer of the skin. They both even out the texture of the skin with no fuss over downtime and peeling skin. Both offer rewarding results that you will visibily see after each treatment. A series of treatments will offer the maximum benefit that improves each time you receive the services. Both Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning will improve the skin’s complexion, pigmentation concerns, damaged skin cells, and fine lines/wrinkles, however each treatment offers added benefits that the other just simply can not match.

Diamond-Tip Microdermabrasion uses a handpiece with an abrasive tip, this piece is attached to a vaccum tube. This method of exfoliation is similar to paper sanding the surface of furniture. This allows for easier extractions, brighter complexion, and deep product penetration.

The Main Focus Of Microdermabrasion

If you have skin concerns such as extractions, congestion in the chin and nose, blackheads, and whiteheads this is the ideal treatment out of the two. The combination of the handpiece and the vaccum tube gives you a really deep cleanse of your pores.

Ideal Skin Types for Microdermabrasion

All skin types are ideal for this treatment, even sensitive skin. The great things about this treatment is that the pressure and suction can be adjusted giving you a customizable treatment. On the other hand, this facial is not suitable for pregnant moms. But don’t worry there are other options for you!

More Important Information

Microdermabrasion removes about 1-2 weeks of dead/damaged skin cells, so it can be performed weekly or bi-weekly which is left to the discretion of you skin concern and your esthetician. There may be some redness and slight inflammation which will go away quickly. (this is case by case) There is NO dowtime! Ranging from 30-60 minutes, this is a great option for on-the-go facials and lunch breaks! A series of 4-6 treatments are recommended for maximum results.

Dermaplaning uses a medical grade scalpel (sharp blade) to exfoliate “shave off” dead/damaged skin cells from the outer layers of the skin. This also allows for easier extractions, brighter complexion, and deeper product penetration, however, unlike microdermabrasion, it also removes vellus hair (peach fuzz). This skin will feel silky smooth and much clearer.

The Main Focus Of Dermaplaning

If you are more interested in correcting skin texture and complexion concerns such as pigmentation, acne scarring, fine lines/wrinkles, dark under eye circles, or grainy skin, this is the ideal treatment for you. Microdermabrasion does target these same concerns but Dermaplaning removes more layers in one treatment which will give you better results in less time. (3-4 weeks of dead/damaged skin)

Ideal Skin Types for Dermaplaning

Just like Microdermabrasion, all skin types are ideal for Dermaplaning, however, this is one of few treatments that pregnant moms can enjoy! This is a gentle exfoliating treatment that penetrates down to the dermis (your true skin) promoting elasticity, collagen production, and new cell regeneration.

Other Important Information

With miminum redness and inflammation, Dermaplaning is a great facial to get for events and special occasions. And as an added bonus, the results are so smooth your makeup will apply much smoother and natural. Because we are removing about 3-4 weeks of dead/damaged skin, this facial can be done on a monthly regimen (every 4weeks).

Although these facial treatments offer real benefits and can stand alone, it’s always a great idea to layer treatments like these with other really beneficial ones. Both Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning pair well with others facials such as Microneedling, Chemical Peels, Acid Peels (Vitmain C Peels), LED Light Therapy, and HydraFacials.

Layering treatments allows you to boost the benefits and acheive skincare goals much faster than doing treatments one at a time. If you are not sure if layering is ideal for you and your personal needs always discuss options with your Licensed Esthetician.
